Our ambassador
Shan Morgan has taken up post as Her Majesty's Ambassador to the Argentine Republic and Her Majesty's non-resident Ambassador to the Republic of Paraguay. Ms Morgan has wide experience of representing the UK Government at international and European levels and has worked on a broad spectrum of subjects including European Union legislation and policy, social and labour market affairs, climate change and the environment, and local and regional economic development. In her previous role as Director of European Union affairs in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in London, Ms Morgan was responsible for the negotiations and UK Parliamentary ratification of the EU Lisbon Treaty. Previously, she has held senior posts at the UK Permanent Representation in Brussels and at the British Embassy in Paris.
Ms Morgan's early career focused on employment and vocational training policy and programmes - she has worked with a wide range of NGOs, trade unions and business organisations to deliver the Government's programmes for unemployed adults and young people. Between 1994 - 97, she was the UK Government's Delegate to the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation, and also took part in UN and WTO negotiations. She has also worked in the European Commission in Brussels as a seconded expert on long-term unemployment and local economic development initiatives.
Ms Morgan joined the UK Civil Service in 1977 with a degree in French literature and language from the University of Kent. She was born in London to a family of Welsh origin, and she has strong ties to Wales. Her personal interests include walking and learning Welsh - which she is looking forward to using in her contacts with the Argentine-Welsh community in Patagonia.
